How to confidently rock any trend

There are some trends that should never come back in style. Snap bracelets. Velour tracksuits. Those weird '90s tattoo chokers are back and I’m not OK with it.

But the ‘70s is a decade that makes the rounds every few years, and this can generally be celebrated. (However there are several trends from this period that I, for one, do not enjoy. Never been a fan of bell sleeves, plus platform clogs give me the heebie jeebies.) That said, I love me some embroidery, felt hats and big ol’ sunglasses any day. If you need some more examples, Harper’s Bazaar did a wonderful job of choosing decade-appropriate pieces that are on-trend and still super wearable.

How do you follow a trend without going overboard?

  1. Play with proportions. If I had worn flares with this top, I definitely would have looked like an extra from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But the super slim fit helps keep the look sleek and modern.
  2. Mix in classics. A structured bag adds class. I also love how the gold hardware brings a little bit of luxe that’s not generally seen in a boho look. You could also throw a lightweight trench or even a leather jacket over this to keep it from looking dated.
  3. Limit trends to one or two pieces. If your goal is to look savvy and not Halloween-y, don’t go overboard. Pick one or two trends that you love (like embroidery and gladiator sandals, or a felt hat and faux-fur vest) and round the rest of the outfit out with subtle classics. Think balance, not Woodstock.

And although we're talking in the context of '70s, these tips can be applied to virtually any trend. Quick example: if you want to try goth go for a dark red wine lipstick or an all black ensemble. Not both, Wednesday Addams.
